Key takeaways

  • Nigeria is Africa's most populous country, and Remoteli recommends it for all 38 roles in English, as it does South Africa.
  • With UK & Europe hours, it is the usual Junior and Mid recommendation for software, data, design, video and marketing roles.
  • With North America hours, Remoteli recommends Nigeria for every role at Junior level and all but one at Mid level.
  • Nigeria runs on GMT+1 all year, level with the UK in summer and with central Europe in winter.

If you are hiring a developer, a designer, a data analyst or a sales development professional, there is a good chance Remoteli's Solution Builder will point you to Nigeria. Remoteli recommends it for all 38 roles in English, depending on the hours and experience level you choose. With UK & Europe hours, it is also the usual Junior and Mid recommendation for software, data, design and marketing roles.

This guide explains where that breadth shows up, how working hours change the picture, and how to brief the kinds of roles Nigeria is usually recommended for.

Scale and a Technology Ecosystem

The U.S. International Trade Administration describes Nigeria as the most populous country in Africa, with an estimated 227 million people. Abuja is the capital, but Lagos is where much of the technology activity is concentrated. The ITA's ICT guide calls Lagos Nigeria's largest market, with an ecosystem supported by initiatives such as the Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) and international companies including Google and Microsoft.

The same guide notes that the Nigeria Startup Act was signed into law in October 2022, while observing that implementation has been slow. For an employer hiring remotely, the more useful point is the depth of experienced professionals in software, design, marketing and sales, which is reflected in Remoteli's market profile for Nigeria.

Where Nigeria Leads in Remoteli's Recommendations

Breadth is only half the story. Which market Remoteli recommends depends on the working hours and the experience level you choose, and Nigeria's position changes with both.

With UK & Europe Hours

For English-language roles on UK & Europe hours, Nigeria is the recommendation for 17 roles at Junior level and 19 at Mid level. They cluster in a few areas:

  • Software: Full-Stack, Front-End, Back-End and Mobile App Development, DevOps Engineering and Quality Assurance. See our Software Development service.
  • Data: Data Analyst and Data Engineer, plus Junior Data Scientist and Cybersecurity Support roles. See Data & Cybersecurity.
  • Creative: Graphic Design, UX/UI Design, Video Editing and Motion Graphics. See Creative, Content & Design.
  • Marketing and sales: Brand Development and Business Development at both levels, plus Digital Marketing, Social Media Support, Email & Automation Marketing and Sales Development at Mid level. See Marketing & Advertising and Sales & Business Development.

With North America Hours

Here Nigeria's role is broader still. When you choose North America as the working zone, Remoteli recommends Nigeria for every one of the 38 roles at Junior level, and for 37 at Mid level (the exception is Technical Project Management, which moves to South Africa). Nigerian afternoons overlap with East Coast mornings, which is what makes this work.

At Senior Level

Nigeria is not usually the Senior recommendation. For Senior roles in English, Remoteli most often recommends South Africa; see hiring talent in South Africa. Many teams combine the two: a Senior lead in one market and Junior or Mid colleagues in Nigeria.

Language and Working Hours

According to the ITA's business travel guide, English is Nigeria's official language, although it is a second language for many Nigerians who also speak languages such as Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo; most businesspeople communicate fluently in English. Every Remoteli professional works in business-level English.

The same guide confirms that local time is GMT+1 with no daylight saving. In practice, a Nigerian working day is level with the UK's from late March to late October and one hour ahead in winter. It matches central European time in winter and runs one hour behind it in summer.

Briefing Technical, Creative and Commercial Roles

Most roles recommended in Nigeria produce work that can be reviewed objectively: code, designs, campaigns, pipeline. That makes the brief and the first few weeks especially important.

Software and Data

Describe your stack, your branching and review process, how work is tested and deployed, and who approves changes. Say whether the person joins an existing codebase or starts something new. A Junior developer needs clear tickets and a reviewer; a Mid developer can own well-scoped features. Our guide to hiring remote software developers covers interviews and onboarding, and the cost of hiring a software developer in the UK gives a benchmark.

Design and Creative

Share brand guidelines, examples of work you like and the tools your team uses. Decide who gives creative feedback and how many review rounds are normal. A written definition of "done" saves more time than any other single step. In interviews, ask for a walkthrough of a past project: how a designer explains their decisions tells you a lot about how they will work remotely.

Marketing and Sales

Be specific about channels, targets and systems, such as your CRM or email platform. For sales roles, explain your ideal customer, your qualification criteria and where the hand-off to your team happens. If you are deciding whether you are ready for this hire, read when to hire your first SDR.

Before You Hire: A Short Checklist

Questions to settle before you configure the role

  • Which role, and which experience level, fits the work?
  • Which working zone do you need: UK & Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific or Flexible?
  • What does good output look like after 30 and 90 days?
  • Which tools, repositories or accounts will the person need on day one?
  • Who reviews their work, and how quickly?

Nigeria Alongside Other Markets

For process-led administration, support and bookkeeping roles on UK hours, Ghana is usually the Junior recommendation; see hiring talent in Ghana. For technical roles with Asia-Pacific hours, Egypt often comes forward instead; see hiring talent in Egypt. Our comparison of the best African countries for software developers looks at the technical picture in more depth, and the guide to hiring talent in Africa covers all eight markets.
