African Talent

Africa, the Philippines or India? Where Should a UK Business Hire Remote Talent?

A fair comparison of three remote talent regions for UK and European businesses: working-hour overlap, languages and how mature each market is, using sourced figures only.

Key takeaways

  • The Philippines and India have far larger, longer-established outsourcing sectors than any single African market.
  • For UK and European hours, Africa's time zones (GMT to GMT+3) give five to eight shared hours on a normal local day; India gives two and a half to three and a half, the Philippines one at most.
  • English is official in the Philippines and widely used in Indian public life; African markets add French and Arabic as working languages.
  • Choose by the hours, language and role you need, then compare like-for-like models rather than headline rates.

When a UK business first looks at remote hiring abroad, the shortlist usually writes itself: the Philippines or India. Both have decades of outsourcing history, large English-speaking workforces and plenty of providers. Africa is rarely on the list, even though several of its markets sit in or near the UK's own time zone.

This comparison sets the three side by side on the things that decide how a remote hire works for you: shared working hours, language and the maturity of each market. It uses only sourced figures and makes no price claims about the Philippines or India. We are an African talent provider, so we have said where the other two regions are stronger, not only where Africa is.

The Short Answer

  • Choose the Philippines or India if you want work done overnight relative to the UK, need coverage for customers in Asia-Pacific, or want to buy from very large, established outsourcing sectors.
  • Choose Africa if you want a dedicated professional working most of your UK or European day, need French or Arabic as well as English, or are building a small team that should feel like part of yours.
  • For North American hours, none of the three shares a full US working day on a normal local schedule, but West African markets come closest.

The rest of this piece explains the reasoning, so you can test it against your own needs.

Time Zones and Working-Hour Overlap

Time zones are the clearest difference between the three regions. The figures below come from the IANA Time Zone Database. Remoteli's eight African markets sit between GMT and GMT+3; India is on GMT+5:30 and the Philippines on GMT+8, neither with daylight saving time. The UK, Europe and the eastern United States all change their clocks, so gaps move by an hour through the year.

Translate that into a working day. If both sides keep a normal 9:00 to 17:00 local day, a professional in Ghana shares seven or eight hours with London, one in Kenya five or six, one in India two and a half to three and a half, and one in Manila no more than an hour. Covering more of the UK day from Asia means moving the professional's hours into their evening or night. That can work, and many providers organise it, but it is a different arrangement from a colleague who simply works when you do.

The same logic reverses if your customers are in Asia-Pacific. There, India and the Philippines are close by, and Africa is further away, although Remoteli does recommend markets for Asia-Pacific working hours, most often Kenya, Egypt or South Africa depending on the role. Languages

All three regions can supply professionals who work in English, but the legal and practical position differs, and only Africa offers French and Arabic as working languages within the same supplier footprint.

  • The Philippines: the Constitution makes Filipino and, "until otherwise provided by law, English" the official languages for communication and instruction.
  • India: the Constitution makes Hindi the official language of the Union, and the Official Languages Act 1963 provides that English may continue to be used alongside it for official purposes.
  • Africa: English is official in Ghana and Nigeria, co-official in Kenya and Rwanda, and the main business language in South Africa. French is the official language of Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire and co-official in Rwanda. Arabic is the official language of Egypt.

If you serve customers in France, Belgium, francophone Africa, North Africa or the Gulf, that last point can decide the question on its own. See our guides to French-speaking talent in Africa and Arabic-speaking professionals from Egypt.

Market Maturity and Scale

This is where the Philippines and India are strongest, and it would be misleading to suggest otherwise. Their outsourcing and technology sectors are among the largest in the world.

The Philippines: the IT and business process management sector passed $40 billion in revenue in 2025 with 1.9 million workers, according to the industry association IBPAP, as reported by The Philippine Star in January 2026.

India: Nasscom's Strategic Review 2026 expects the technology sector to cross the $315 bn mark in FY26, with direct employment projected at around 6 million.

Africa's markets are smaller and younger, but growing, and some are closely tied to the UK.

  • South Africa: the business process association BPESA estimates the country's global business services workforce at 150,000 in 2024, with the UK its largest source market at a 55% share of personnel.
  • Developer communities: GitHub's Octoverse 2024 counted more than 1.1 million developers on GitHub in Nigeria, more than 990,000 in Egypt, more than 664,000 in South Africa and more than 393,000 in Kenya, each up by more than 20% on the previous year.

Scale brings choice of providers and deep benches for large programmes. It matters less if you are hiring one to ten dedicated professionals, where the question is whether the right person exists in a market you can work with, not whether the sector employs millions. South Africa's UK orientation is worth noting for UK buyers: the market is already used to UK customers, accents and expectations. Our guide to hiring talent in South Africa covers it in more depth.

Cost: Compare Models, Not Countries

Headline rates for the Philippines and India vary so widely by provider, role and model that a single comparison would mislead, so we do not make one. What you can do is compare like with like. A shared seat in a contact centre, a freelancer on an hourly rate and a dedicated full-time professional are different products, wherever they are based.

Remoteli provides dedicated, full-time professionals on a monthly rolling subscription with no setup fees. Prices depend on role, experience level and market. As a starting point:

When you compare quotes from any region, ask the same questions: Is the person dedicated to you full time? Who handles recruitment, onboarding and support? What happens if they leave? Who provides the equipment and internet connection? Our comparison of remote hiring models sets out the main options.

How to Decide

Five questions that settle most shortlists

  • Which hours must this person share with your team or customers?
  • Which languages will they work in, now and in the next year?
  • Is this one dedicated role, a small team or a large programme?
  • How much will they collaborate in real time versus work independently?
  • Which model are you comparing: shared seats, freelancers or dedicated professionals?

If the answers point to UK or European hours, French or Arabic, or a small dedicated team, Africa deserves a place on the shortlist. Our guide to hiring talent in Africa explains the eight markets, and the Solution Builder will recommend one for your role.
