What Does a Customer Service Agent Cost in the UK?

The real cost of a UK customer service agent goes well beyond the hourly wage. What drives it, how coverage changes the maths, and how a dedicated remote professional compares.

Key takeaways

  • The National Living Wage sets the floor for a UK agent's pay; the role, hours, languages and complexity push it up from there.
  • Coverage drives cost more than pay: one full-time person cannot staff long opening hours or cover their own leave.
  • Per-ticket and per-hour outsourcing suits fluctuating volume; a dedicated agent suits steady volume and product depth.
  • A Remoteli Customer Support professional is one monthly subscription, excluding VAT, with recruitment, onboarding and operational support included.

Ask what a customer service agent costs and most answers stop at an hourly wage. For an employer, that is the smallest useful part of the answer. The full cost of a support seat includes employer National Insurance and pension, recruitment and training, a helpdesk licence, a share of a team leader's time, and, most importantly, the number of people you need to keep your channels staffed during the hours customers expect you to be there.

This guide builds that cost from the bottom up for a UK hire, then compares it with outsourced support and with a dedicated remote Customer Support professional through Remoteli. Where official figures exist we quote them with their dates; where they do not, we explain what moves the number.

What Drives the Cost of a Support Agent

Five factors decide most of the cost, whichever model you choose:

  • Complexity. Password resets and order queries need less experience than billing disputes, technical troubleshooting or regulated products.
  • Channels. Phone needs real-time availability; email and tickets can be queued; live chat sits between the two.
  • Hours. Weekday office hours are the cheapest pattern to staff. Evenings, weekends and multiple time zones need more people.
  • Languages. Each additional language narrows the talent pool and can mean extra headcount.
  • Volume and its swings. Steady volume favours dedicated people; sharp seasonal peaks favour flexible capacity.

If you are still deciding whether you need a first hire at all, our guide on when to hire customer support covers the signals. If you are unsure whether the role is support or success, see customer support vs customer success.

The In-House Picture

Pay

The legal floor is the National Living Wage (opens in a new tab), which is £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21 and over from April 2026, up from £12.21 in the previous year.

Official earnings data is a more reliable guide than job adverts. In the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (2025 provisional, Table 14.7a), median gross annual pay for full-time employees in customer service occupations n.e.c. (SOC 2020 code 7219) was £27,848, with the middle half of jobs between £24,583 and £33,076. For call and contact centre occupations (code 7211) the median was £27,035, with the middle half between £24,282 and £32,536. The figures cover the tax year to 5 April 2025 for full-time employees who had been in the same job for more than a year. They describe UK employee pay, not Remoteli's prices. Team leads, multilingual agents and technical support roles usually sit towards the top of the range or above it, so check the figures against your own pay bands.

Statutory On-Costs

On top of pay, employer National Insurance (opens in a new tab) is 15% on earnings above the secondary threshold of £5,000 a year for 2026 to 2027, and auto-enrolment (opens in a new tab) requires an employer pension contribution of at least 3% of qualifying earnings.

Our guide to the hidden costs of hiring an employee works through these on-costs at the UK median salary, alongside the other layers below.

Recruitment, Training and Tools

The CIPD's Resourcing and talent planning report 2026 (opens in a new tab) puts the median cost per hire for employees below senior management at £2,000, based on a survey of UK organisations in April and May 2026. The CIPD notes the subsample is small and costs vary widely.

Support roles add their own costs: product training before an agent can work unsupervised, quality assurance time from a team lead, and per-seat software such as a helpdesk, telephony and knowledge base. And whenever an agent leaves, the hiring and training cycle starts again.

Coverage: The Cost Most Budgets Miss

A single full-time agent covers one shift, five days a week. That sounds obvious, but it changes the maths quickly. If your support hours are 8am to 8pm on weekdays, that is 60 hours a week, so one 40-hour agent cannot cover it alone. Add Saturday cover or a second time zone and you need more people again.

Leave matters too. Most UK workers on a five-day week are entitled to at least 28 days' paid annual leave (opens in a new tab), the equivalent of 5.6 weeks a year.

With a team of one, that is more than a month each year when your queue has no owner unless someone else steps in. This is why support teams are usually planned in headcount, not hours: the real cost of keeping a channel open is the cost of the people needed to staff it, plus cover.

Outsourced Support: How It Is Priced

Outsourcing providers and contact centres price support in several ways, and each puts the cost risk in a different place:

How common customer support models compare (qualitative)
ModelHow you payWorks well whenWatch for
In-house employeeSalary plus on-costsSupport is core and needs deep product knowledgeCoverage, recruitment and attrition sit with you
Shared outsourced teamPer ticket, per minute or per hourVolume is spiky or unpredictableAgents split time across clients; less product depth

Our customer support outsourcing guide covers these models and how to keep quality high. For cost, the useful question is simple: how many hours of genuinely productive support do you need each week, and how steady is that demand?

How Remoteli Pricing Works

Remoteli provides a dedicated, full-time Customer Support professional who works only on your queue, in your tools and to your processes. You pay one monthly subscription per professional. Fees exclude VAT and run on a monthly rolling basis with no setup fees. The subscription covers a professional working 180 hours a month, together with recruitment, onboarding and ongoing operational support from Remoteli.

Your actual price depends on the experience level (Junior, Mid or Senior), the working language, the hours you need covered and the talent market recommended for that combination. For product-heavy queues, Technical Support is priced as a separate role:

To be clear about what is not included: you still own your helpdesk and telephony licences and the day-to-day management of the queue. Professionals are independent contractors who work eight hours a day, five days a week, and take 21 days' annual leave. New standard subscriptions do not include automatic cover during leave, so if a channel must never go unstaffed, plan for two people or a rota, exactly as you would in-house. Extended or unusual hours need operational agreement in advance.

If a professional is not the right fit, Remoteli can arrange a replacement within two full business days of your request, provided Remoteli is permitted to select and vet the replacement. Our guide to the best African countries for customer support explains how language and time zone shape where your professional is likely to be based.

How to Decide

  • Hire in-house if support is a core differentiator, needs to sit beside your product team, or involves regulated decisions you want inside your organisation.
  • Use shared outsourced support if volume swings sharply and you mainly need overflow capacity.
  • Choose a dedicated remote professional if your volume is steady enough for at least one full-time person, you want them to learn your product properly, and you would rather not run recruitment and HR yourself.

Whichever route you take, compare on the cost of keeping your channels properly staffed, not the cost of one person's pay. The Customer Experience service page sets out the support roles Remoteli offers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Remoteli price per agent or per ticket?

Per professional, per month. There are no per-ticket or per-minute charges, and fees are shown excluding VAT.

Can one remote agent cover our UK business hours?

One professional works eight hours a day, five days a week. If your support hours are longer, or a channel must stay staffed during leave, you will need more than one person.

Who manages the agent day to day?

You direct the work, set priorities and own your processes. Remoteli handles recruitment, onboarding and ongoing operational support.
